handbuilding flanged domed lids for oval pots

I would like to be able to make a domed lid for a baker-type oval pot. The
lid needs to have a slight overhang, and I'd love to be able to put a gallery
on the lid so it doesn';t slip around. I have tried making the bowl and then
easing a slab into it, and can get the dome part, but I keep having trouble
with the rim overhanging the edge of the bowl warping. Any ideas on how to
keep it flat and put a gallery into it would be very helpful.
Thanks so much!

Cate -
When you slump the slab-lid into the baker, flatten out the overhanging
flange a bit. When the lid is soft-leather-hard, carefully remove it,
moisten the rim of the baker slightly, and then set the lid right-side-up on
the baker in the desired position, and remove again. With a pencil or a
sharpened dowel, immediately mark the outer edge of the ring left on the
underside of the lid by the moistened rim of the baker. Roll out a coil of
clay about 1/2" diameter. Score a band just inside the mark on the
underside of the lid. Slurry well and attach the coil to form a gallery.
Once the coil is well attached, work it along it's length with a sponge to
shape it and smooth it. Work it outwards so that it hugs the line. Let it
stiffen up just a bit, and then invert it on the baker.

The best possible situation at this point is for there to be slight
interference between the gallery and the baker, so that when you lower it in
place on the baker, the rim of the baker will impress the outer edge of the
coil/gallery you have added. You can then remove it, observe the imprint of
the baker rim on the coil, and then carefully trim it for a perfect fit.
Practice this a bit and you will have a perfect fitting oval lid every time.

Needless to say, such a lid will usually only fit one way, so it is good to
apply some tiny medallions or some other registration mark at corresponding
locations on rim of the lid and the baker, so people will know how to put on
the lid.
Good luck -
