As said by others there is no rule. I do a lot of slip decoration on
plates and bowls and do that BEFORE TRIMMING for two reasons: if I goof up I
have wasted no time on trimming, AND the extra clay supports/withstands the
weight of the slip a lot better. The outside is slipped after trimming.
