Beginner, intermediate, advanced, you get 15 in 1 -- enough substance for
the top 5 at all three levels -- with Michael Cardew's Pioneer Pottery.

Whose mortgage pots changed for the (much) better after he read and took to
heart (or, rather, to left hand), "Before cutting off [the freshly made
pot], make one more pass with the inside hand, using only a minimum of
water or slurry, to remove tools marks and to restore the freshness of the
form. In all throwing, the action of the inside hand is 'from the heart';
always tensional and positive, creating the form and making it grow."

I must second Dave's suggestion. I am a beginner, and I am loving =
Cardew's book. I read it on my lunch break and I mention things I have =
read to my teacher whenever I get the chance. (She still thinks I'm a =
nut.) Some of the things Michael C. mentions in his book (Pioneer =
Pottery) are contrary to what I see or have read in other places, but as =
a beginner, I am still sorting out those things. As a place to go for =
exposure to the potterly "ideals" as well as good explanation of =
practical information, this book has been one of my favorites. I do =
wish, however, that I could read a book from the other side of the pond =
written by a potter as in touch with his country's potting as MC was =
with England's (and yes I know that MC spent many years abroad in Africa =
as well as his time in W).
