Dear Martin Rice,=20

Thank you for that response.

I am not certain of what the figures are like in the USofA or even in =
Australia for the current drop out rates during first year of tertiary =
studies. I know that during in my teaching career it always seemed =
rather high, much higher than could be accounted for by idleness or =
being a dilettante. If this still the case, would there be an =
improvement in retention rates and attainment levels if those who were =
appointed as teachers were required to have some sort of post grad =
certification in those aspects of education which I mentioned.

One of the concepts I came to implement in high school was classed as =
"Teaching for Mastery". In essence, it was the task of the teacher to =
engineer the success of the student. It is a provocative, perverse and =
controversial psychology but it works. Do you know if this still being =
used.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis
