I read somewhere many years ago that socks are the larvae of wire coat
hangers.
Do you have a cat? I also read about a sock-stealing cat that made a lovely
bed in the basement with her purloined socks.

I'd bet many of us have done the same thing with all kinds of necessary and
unnecessary items. I do it so often I call it "selective blindness". Sort
of like my kids with selective hearing. They can't hear me telling them in
a very loud voice to do something right NOW but they can hear a candy
wrapper at 500 feet. I just wish I could figure out what it is about all
those disappearing socks....

BTW, wet a sock, wrap it once around a bottle or vase at its widest point,
holding one end in each hand. As the wheel goes around, gradually pull the
ends of the sock apart so the loop of sock tightens on the bottle and
presses it inward. The more highly textured the sock, the cooler the
pattern. Women's nylons give a blah pattern. Knobby, knitted wools are
great! (I still have one from living in Omaha, Nebr.) Of course, if I
didn't have so many "disappeared socks" I would not have had singles to give
me this idea.

That is a very simple question to answer, Michele... They all go to the
Land of the Single Socks.

Currently hosting a young US relative just graduated from University.
Taking two months time out to think about what next? Interestingly enough
he is contemplating a Masters in ethics. His major? Business Management. He
has spent a great deal of time reading so far... He cannot get over the
"totally different viewpoint" of the literature in this house. He'll be
looking for reds under the bed next...
