Yipes! I have my first case of the spinnies in my PP, and can't =
remember who told me how to get rid of 'em and make the thing pug again. =
I THINK it was Bruce (king of the parenthetical expression) Girrell, =
but not sure. Anybody else know how to get rid of the spinnies?

Thanks. :)

PS: The spinnies are a phenomenon which occur when the clay/slip =
mixture is too wet in the mixing chamber, and instead of mixing clay, =
the whole mass just spins in the chamber. :(

I started with nothing and I still have most of it!

When clay just spins in the barrel, I add a nice big chunk of firm clay and
force the lid down and turn it on. If that doesn't work, I do it again.
Sooner or later, the clay has no choice but to mix rather than spin.

Yep, it was me.

Does this mean my suggestions didn't work for you?

Bruce "let's get parenthetical" Girrell

Send some stiff stuff through, it should push it out, but it will be messy!

When we get the spinnies in the Soldner clay mixer, we just add dry clay
powder to get it to mix. Patricia Harden

Lisa,
When you find that you need to get the clay mixture wetter, and
subsequently add water, also sprinkle a small scoop of dry over the whole
gloppy mess, and very shortly it will "catch" and begin mixing properly.
If it doesn't catch, then you need to add just a tad more dry.

This works very efficently, but you have to be careful not to get carried
away adding a little of this and a little of that, and then back to the
"this" again, etc. The pugger barrel gets too full and starts straining.

We have a Peter Pugger in our guild which is used about 15 times a week.
We instruct ourselves not to go much beyond about 2/3 full because of
strain. We let the mixer run two or three times at about 8-10 minutes
each time, to get the consistency thoroughly mixed withoutt heating up the
mixer unduly.

On at least 3 occasions, bearings have been sheared --shorn?--in our pugger
because of strain on it-- either too much stuff in there or trying to mix
clay that was too hard.

If you (or anyone) are interested in our approximate proportion recipe for
the pugger, let me know.
