I've been making horsehair pottery for a couple of years now,
but I've always wondered where the technique originated. Does
anyone have any historical background on horsehair pots?

Michael Morier is claimed by the "Ortega's Gifts" site to be originator of
"Horsehair" technique...
A couple of searches turned up no other images than the two on the above link.

The very first time I saw horsehair pots was in Joan Cawley Gallery in Santa
Fe... the works of Michael Morier took my breath away... and though at the
time I could barely afford it... I walked out of that gallery that day with a
beautiful Michael Morier horsehair pot... one that was about 8" tall X 12"
wide.

My wife and I cherished that pot for a number of years along with some others
we've collected over time. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me... some
"bonehead" packer from Allied Van Lines had packed it underneath a ton of
dishes and it was broken into pieces when we unpacked it. Filing a claim with
them was a nightmare and we never did get a chance to replace it. I would
like to get another of Michael's pieces one day... his work is truly
beautiful.
