fire paint/itc on kaowool

Hey guys,

I was thinking about mel's post on fire paint while driving down the =
road today. When we had NCECA in Charlotte, there were some samples of =
kaowool that had been sprayed with ITC of some type or other in the =
Clayart room. =20

What I was thinking was that instead of, or in addition to, firepaint, =
since Kaowool is relatively inexpensive (especially compared to =
rebuilding a house.......) one could nail sheets of Kaowool to the =
rafters above a kiln and spray with ITC or firepaint. Does this make =
any sense at all?

I started with nothing and I still have most of it!

Hi LP
Regarding the idea of coating ceramic fiber for overhead kiln shield, I'd
be afraid of the kaowool shedding those pesky barbed microscopic fibers
down into my work area, and having them lodge in my lungs. I've seen glass
blowers use this method though, on kiln doors, and seen it done with raku
kilns too. But thats not an overhead application. In my raku shed, I hung
an old discarded, solid aluminum, ten foot satalite dish overhead in the
rafters. Great heat sheild. I run a propane fired top hat fiber raku
kiln, and two electrics under it. When I did the instalation I had
intended to plumb insulated stove pipe up from the hole in the center of
the dish through the the roof, particularly to vent out the heat from the
gas kiln. During the first test fireing I discover that the massive
aluminum dish disapates so much heat and it stays so cool in the area of
the rafters that it was not nesessary. Regarding wall sheilds, I prefer
how metal dissapates the heat, while cement board either absorbs, or
reflects. The wall stays cooler, therefore less clearence is needed.
Works for me.

Oh, by the way, I noticed in my Axner catalog that they now carry a ceramic
fiber blanket that is claimed to be "soluble in the lung". Any coments on
this new product?

Dear Leland G. Hall

You ask; "Oh, by the way, I noticed in my Axner catalog that they now =

lung". Any comments on this new product?"

How prolific is this shedding of fibre and if it is soluble in the lung, =
what does it do when it gets into your pulmonary fluids. Is is adsorbed =
into your bloodstream or do you start to eject excessive sputum and =
develop a bad cough?

Sounds rather suspect to me. More information is needed.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.=20
