frosty propane burners

Hello all,
as a lurker, i always wondered what the subject of my 1st post would be. =
now i know.=20
when i strike up my two vapor propane burners to start a firing, it =
usually doesn't take long until i see frost and even ice buildup on my =
regulator. and the psi needle lurching, sputtering, up and down the =
gauge. i know that drawing too much off a near-empty tank can lead to =
freeze-up, but I've never had less than 40% in my 500 gal. tank, and i'm =
never drawing very much at the start of a firing...and i would think =
that freeze-up would occur at the tank itself, not 25 feet away near the =
burners.=20
I've always managed to deal with the problem by adjusting the burners =
and the regulator to barely a trickle of flame. this evens out the jumpy =
gauge and dissipates the building frost. after a couple hours of this, i =
slowly increase the pressure. if i increase too much, the problem starts =
again, so i back down for a while longer, until i'm able to increase a =
bit more. after several hours, the problem is gone and I can fire at =
will. this problem does keep me from firing too fast, but it's annoying, =
and potentially dangerous since i don't use pilot burners.
i think the cause of the problem is all the humidity in a midmissouri =
river town. between my monthly firings, i bring my burners inside, and =
cover all the exposed threads on the regulator and the burners with =
aluminum foil to keep the wasps out of the system. i thought this would =
help with moisture getting in the line, but it doesn't seem to help.
am i in the ballpark with my diagnosis. has anyone else had this problem =
early in propane firings? is there a solution?
