wood firing kiln

updated sun 28 jul 02

Don Kimon Lightner on mon 22 jul 02

I am looking for someone with a wood fire kiln whom
would be willing to allow me to share kiln space with
them. I have made some pieces to use for chanoyu
(Japanese tea ceremony) and want the natural ash
glazes typical of these kind of utencils. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't there a anagama or some such thing at Northern Arizona U in Flagstaff? Check
it out, let us know, maybe I can drive over from San Diego, I would like to do this
also.

You might try Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, they have the
largest woodfiring program that I know of, I'm sure they'll let you put some
pieces in exchange for help firing. Don Reitz is in Clarksdale, and I
remember him mentioning once that he always needs help firing and in
exchange he'll give you space in the kiln.

The new prof seems to prefer that only students have
use of the kilns at NAU. I am a doctor and have a
hard time taking weeks off to take classes but have
asked if some volunteer time/sweat labor and a fee
would be fair trade to fire in their anagama kiln.
The proposition was painfully avoided and the
fee/pieces ratio rather high. So this is why I search
elsewhere.

NAU has had opportunities in the past for others to participate in
firings there. We have heard about them over here in Vegas, and had
opportunities to participate. Some here have done so. If there has
been a change of policy, someone should be up front about it. The
liability issue doesn't really wash, because there are ways around that.
Offer a firing workshop with a fee, etc. I didn't understand your
original desire as wanting to take over and fill and fire a whole load
by yourself. If I understood you correctly you wanted to fire some
pieces and were willing to compensate in some manner for the privilege.
Your original post also didn't mention NAU, just your desire to find a
place to wood fire if I remember correctly.

Vince,
I have nothing against Mr. Hess and I understand the
liabilities and responsibilities of his position
because I know many of his peers. Although the subject
of insurance or risk did not come up, and if it had I
would completely understand the concern. Many people
have suggested that I try to fire up at NAU, as many
have done so in the past, and I felt I had to give
reason why I was not able to do so, since I had been
asked.
I in no way intended to slime Mr Hess and my post did
not say anything about how he is doing his job, which
I understand, he is indeed doing a fine job. I simply
want to fire my pieces and was "painfully avoided", an
unfortunate reality. A simple "no, I am sorry" might
have been a better answer don't you think so?!

This isn't really fair to Jason Hess. "Painfully avoided" is right, because
this opens up all sorts of problems. Jason is responsible for those kilns,
and for everyone who uses them, and he is really putting himself at risk if
he allows someone to fire if they are not covered by the University's
liability insurance. Jason is doing an excellent job at NAU, but he has a
lot of students and a great deal of responsibility, and I can understand why
he would not be receptive to this sort of suggestion. It is a shame, but it
is the unfortunate reality.
Best wishes -
