Some potters find the look of the straight extruded handle on the mug as =
being too mechanical. This is probably the number one criticism of =
extrusions, being accused of looking rigid and sterile. It is possible, =
though, to create a pleasing handle. Remember that extrusions are the =
starting point, not the end step in the process and further manipulation =
of the clay will yield a softer, more complimentary attachment. =
Extrusions are versatile. They can be used exactly how they exit the =
machine or they can worked, creating the look you desire. Simply pulling =
the base of the extrusion to a taper is an immediate way to give the =
handle a more harmonious look. This will eliminate the problem with the =
cracking also. Cracking and dogearing will occur in a non-plastic clay.

In our studio we utilize a round, one fingered handle for our mugs. =
Attaching a thumb stop to the handle when it is leather hard, this style =
is comfortable, balances well in the hand and looks good on the mug.=20

It is also possible to make an oval from the strap for a two fingered =
mug.=20
