who is the finest tiger in the jungle?/pricing questions

Steve,
I wonder if you have considered writing a business plan? A good business
plan will answer your pricing questions for you. Rather than wonder if
you'll see a profit at the end of the year the plan will TELL you if you'll
see a profit. If you deviate from the plan at least you can anticipate just
HOW MUCH it will affect your income.
Most business advisers/lenders consider it a pre-requisite for anyone
starting a business.

Take Care

I think that is unfair; there are many amongst us who have to make a
living making Ceramics, and those who want to escape their current
employment to make a living doing what they love to do. Those who do not
have that information need it. Those of us who have the information have
a duty to help others. The List is an information exchange, the very
small amount of little ego polishing that occurs is usually dealt with
very smartly by the rest of us.

Jeff,

Thanks for that, The costing exercise I posted about before my comment
on Rikki's post, while not exactly a business plan, was a response (seen
by my Mentor) to my need at the time to be profitable in my production,
by identifying all my outgoings and adjusting profit and cost, coupled
with my proficiency as a maker, to ensure I made a decent living without
having to work all the hours the Deity sent plus a few She hadn't even
heard of!
It worked; that was in the 70's, I'm still very much in business,
although I changed direction into Pottery materials supply a few years
later, not because I wasn't selling pots (closing a successful business
is hard to do), but because Ceramic Supply is an exciting and
challenging way of life which broadens your horizons and brings you into
contact with so many excellent Artists (quite apart from making a
reasonable living!).

I love what I'm doing AND I still make pots!

Take care
