wheel head scum

A further thought about the various sorts of scum which people have =
reported as collecting on the surface of the wheel head.
If the metals which the shaft and the wheel head differ and both are =
exposed at the surface there is always the potential for an electrolytic =
cell to form if there are soluble salts in the water which is in the =
plastic clay.
When this moisture dries on the metal it will leave behind residues of =
whatever salts were in solution, be they derived from aluminium or iron =
if the exposed end of the shaft was steel.
