throwing question - tall vases

Just a quick question to experienced potters out there - when making
a "gourd" shaped vase with a long, thin neck,(say 14-16" total height)and a
bulbous bottom, I find that I have problems keeping the neck straight when
collaring. I thought of drying the base a bit with a heat gun to give it
strength after pulling (and before collaring the neck) Should I try doing
it in 2 sections?

Thanks!

Dear David Hrivnak,=20

Must admit that clay gets a bit cantankerous when you start trying to =
get it to obey you in such circumstances.

May I suggest an assistant, some one who can hold still while you are =
collaring that long neck. Have them insert one finger into the neck and =
slightly down below the rim. They keep the top on centre while you do =
the collaring.

Another aid is a very thin throwing stick with a small hemispherical or =
hook shaped end which you insert down the neck to act as the anvil =
against which you thin that clay as you lift with your normally outer =
hand.

sounds to me more like an onion than a gourd.

Have fun,

HI David,
Years aago , out of frustration with collaring, I stood up, reversed both
hands with thumbs down forming a funnel and pulled up with both hands on =
the
outside. Make sure the clay is wet enough and don't go too hard at it,
because it is a mighty hold. Bottles come up fast and high, and with just=
a
little deformation to be corrected by regular throwing and sometimes
cutting. Have seen it done only once in books, but everyone I have shown =
it
to finds it just amazing. Good luck. G=E9rard in No=EBlville ON
