who's yer favorite workshop person?

updated sun 2 jun 02

Kim Lemonakis on wed 29 may 02

I've had the opportunity to attend and host many clay workshops. They are an
important tool to help someone who is trying to find their mark in clay. I
had Lana Wilson from California, she's a hand builder with wonderful surface
decoration and a great glaze guru.
For wheel thrown altered forms Woody Hughes gets my vote. He works with low
fire red clay and treats the clay almost like fabric when he alters and adds
to his forms. He's from Long Island New York.
Both of these individuals are great communicators and entertaining. It's
important to have someone who is a knowledgeable clay artist but it's
equally important that the can relay information.
Good Luck!

Hi Lisa,

Linda McFarling is a terrific teacher (has done classes and workshops at
Odyssey and Penland). Odyssey could probably give you her contact info.

Ron Meyers gives an awesome workshop.
Micheal Simon too.
I think it would be cool to see someone do a hand building workshop too.
Someone with cool work. Maybe like Anne Elliot.
Randy Johnson is good to, and he hand builds and throws.

Lisa,

We have a local guy, Eric Struck, the clay manager of IMCO, just south of
Sacramento. He gives a stunning workshop on throwing (what he calls)
L-A-R-G-E pots. He is remarkably skillful, outgoing, and quite clear in
his explanations WHILE he is actually throwing. (Many of us, when we
concentrate on throwing loose the skill to articulate exactly what we are
doing.)

My pots will never be half the size of Eric's, but his techniques have
taught me to throw some 15-18 inch pots in about four pulls.

IMCO has a website: www.clayimco.com. IMCO's phone number is (916)
383-28411.

I would, of course, also recommend Ian Currie; he is just a wonderful
teacher, and his glaze calc method so easy to unerstand.

Ellen Shankin. She's just amazing. And Pete Pinell....both give
more info than anyone could possibly absorb.

Our guild recently hosted a workshop on Neriage by Lou Miller (see
photos at http://www.ovcag.org/WORKSHOPS/2002_04_APR/index.html

The feedback was tremendous! Lou is a great teacher, gives very clear
instructions and tons of information, and is extremely generous with
materials and handouts.

Plus, the technique is unusual - this isn't "yet another wheel workshop."

not that most of us couldn't use another wheel workshop ;-)

Regards,

Bob

she doesn't do many workshops, but clary illian is fabulous! my throwing
improved more in the two weeks i spent at haystack in her workshop than
they did in the two years before that.

malcolm davis also gives a great workshop - i've taken both a shino
workshop and a teapot workshop with him.

A great duo is Linda Christianson and Pete Pinnell--------I agree with the
other comment about Pete......I took a class with these two last year at
Arrowmont and could not have been more satisfied with the instruction,
content and presentation that both these fine potters gave........... I'm
planning on attending another workshop of Linda Christianson's next
fall..She's got alot of soul and serenity and shares so much of the source
of her creativity........

I recently attended a workshop given by Elmer Taylor, ceramics prof. at
University of North Texas at Denton. It was hosted by David Dahlquist at
his studio in Des Moines, IA. THe workshop encompassed one evening (about 3
hrs.), a long day (about 12 hours including the evening slide presentation),
and the next morning (about 3-1/2 hours). He was very thorough in his
demonstrations and graciously answered all questions. The workshop centered
on his method of throwing and he made about 35 vessels during the course of
the workshop. He may return in December bringing bisqued pots and do a
decorating workshop.

Other favorites include Lana Wilson from Del Mar, CA for a terrific
handbuilding workshop ant Pete Pinnell for handbuilding, throwing and
glazes.

About 20 years ago, I took a two day workshop with the incomparable Mick
Casson. Once I got an understanding of his deep English brogue,
he impressed me with his fluidity, his enthusaism, his lifetime of
experiences in clay, as well as his deeply encrusted apron!
Another Great one.....Don Reitz.
and a week long with Peter King, hands on designing a fireplace surround ,
at the Corcoran here in D.C., will also long be remembered
for the wealth of information, a great group learning experience in
architectural ceramics.
