During the last 2 weeks of June I will be traveling to the Penland area =
of NC, from S Texas for a family reunion. Do some of you have =
suggestions for what I need to see, studios and galleries. I don't want =
to miss something important. Are there any craft fairs going on at that =
time. My family would enjoy going to those too, if they are in the area =
of our reunion, which is Spruce Pine. =20

Hi Lynn,
I spent that winter renting studio space at the Penland Craft School and
Spruce Pine was my centre of enjoyment. I would recommend that you drive up
to the Penland School, check it out and they have a map there of all the
potteries in the area. There are many! I would also stop in Asheville on
your way. There is the Folk Art Center located just out of town on the Blue
Ridge Parkway, great place with all kinds of crafts. In town there is the
Blue Spiral Gallery on Broadway and a few doors down is the America Folk
Gallery. Farther down is the New Morning Gallery. The Grove Inn
Gallery...there is LOTS to see.
I hope you have a great time....gosh I miss Spruce Pine!

Lynn,

I agree with John's advice to go to Penland School (of
Craft) while you are in Spruce Pine. It's only 6 miles
away. While there, you can get the Mitchell county
crafters map at the Penland Gallery or Bringle Studio.
Also, call the school for a tour if you are
interested. See their webpage, penland.org.

Jane Peiser's studio (1/4 mi from Penland school) has
samples of nearly all of the local potters' work and
addresses too.

Also, Thursday, June 20th, 8pm, is the 2nd Session
Penland Auction. It's at Northlight Building on
Penland campus. It's free, open to public, and a great
variety of fine crafts made during the preceeding
session by the student artists and instructors.
Amazing values on wonderful fine craftwork and all $$
go to support the school scholarship fund. Welll,
that's the end of commercial. Didn't mean to preach, I
just think these auctions are an unknown source of
beautiful and economical artwork.

I'll be at the school that session in Linda
Christianson's class. Later, I will be working at
Cynthia Bringle's studio. Hope to see you while I'm
there.

Bolick pottery has a heritage day event the last Saturday of June. They are
a family of 6th and 7th generation potters located just south of Blowing
Rock, NC. A visit to their place would be well worth the trip.

Patrick,
I thot you might be the one Lula has spoken of..... I have headed up that
way for the past four years or so.... Their Heritage Days celebration is a
lot of fun. I am hoping to make it up that way this summer, but am not
sure.... I always help out in whatever way I can. They'll have a kiln
opening, great "traditional mountain music", lots of other craftsmen &
women. And food..... I've helped with the "pinto bean shack" as well as
spelling one of the sister's in turning demo's..... No matter the weather
(which is typically nice!) it is always fun, and really not terribly far
from Asheville.... if you don't mind driving a bit. Get there early if you
want to see anything come out of the kiln.... it's snatched up early!
Folks come from all over... even as far away as Georgia & Virginia. If you
head that way Lynn, do stop & say "hello"..... ask around, most of the
family will have some idea where I'm at... Do come by, you will indeed have
fun!!!!!

Karen (lewis)
(near Raleigh, NC..... the Bolick's have had a definite influence on my
work.....they are some of the nicest folks you could ever meet! And I have
some of the ice tea glasses that Patrick has turned for them... the first
one I got is still my favorite.... :)
