Scoring creates a mechanical key for the part being attached, in the =
sense of a Dovetail Joint.
Yes, it is advisable to use the densest slurry possible. This is best =
prepared especially for the task from your basic clay, using a small =
amount of water and a deflocculant. It works because the degree of =
shrinkage is minimal compared to the shrinkage of the other pieces.
Soft clay placed against leatherhard clay for example shears away =
because of differential shrinkage. This generates sufficient force to =
cause a fracture across the join.
