digital pyrometer troubleshooting

>Hey friends,

My Fluke 51 has suddenly started acting weirdly, and it's not the battery.
First, during my last cooldown, I checked temp, it said 409F, so I cracked
open the kiln. When I went to turn off the pyrometer, it suddenly changed
to 500 something, then started flashing numbers around 2000, 1900,
randomly. I wiggled the wires and it went back to four hundred something,
then back to flashing. I changed batteries (twice to make sure)...and it
is still doing the flashing thing.

Now, this thing has been working for me, without a problem since 1997, even
though I forget and leave it out in the rain, hot sun, etc
(occasionally)... does this sound like a loose connection in the wire?
or???? Thanks in advance!

Mish

This surely sounds like a bad connection. I suggest that you remove the
connecting wires, clean them off with steel wool and reconnect them and
fasten them tightly. I think this will eliminate that possibility of a
loose
or bad connection. Good luck.

Mishy,

If any digital starts to go haywire it's often an intermittent
disconnect, usually (but not always) in the thermocouple, check the
thermocouple circuit (a torch battery and a bulb is as good a way as
any), and then trace the break and fix it. If it's in the compensating
cable (and they often are), renew it, cable is comparatively cheap, just
make sure the cable is connected the right way round. I don't know what
the American standards are, but in Europe *live* is the same colour as
the cable outer cover.

All the best
