Hello all,

I will be visiting DC soon with a friend who is interested in checking out
the area and especially Tacoma Park. If anyone on the list is in this area
and would be able to provide any information about the area or wouldn't mind
being visited please let me know off list.

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Linda,
Can you give me some specifics on the types of things you would like to do?
If you want to see some great ceramics, check out the Freer Gallery (part of
Smithsonian). To see individual artists (not necessarily potters) and have
the opportunity to buy their work, check out the Torpedo Factory in Old Town
Alexandria. You are welcome to contact me off list.

While you're at the Freer, check out the Sackler next door.
There is a wonderful exhibit, Word Play, of work by Xu
Bing--not pottery, but wonderful.
http://www.asia.si.edu/exhibitions/xubing.htm
If you have any extra time, in the National Gallery in the
West Wing, don't miss the Christo drawings (fantastic!)
http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/christoinfo.htm
and
http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/exhibits.htm#medici The
Flowering of Florence: Botanical Art for the Medici.

I went mainly to see the Goya exhibit, but these three were
the highlights of the trip. Some of the Goya etchings are
pretty incredible.

Do not miss the Freer Basement! You can probably arrange it yourself by
calling the museum or maybe Jonathan or Aiko (if she's still around) or
maybe even Jon Singer can arrange it if you contact them.

Just try to imagine yourself fondling some of the most beautiful pots of
asian history. Well, if you go, you won't have to. ;-)

Hope you're getting all settled into your new studio.

Russel

Summer has arrived in Brussels, 20 degrees and higher, well at least for
the next few days. Better book your flights now, before you miss it.

Wasn't it amazing? The installation refers to so many areas
of the arts: bookmaking, conceptual art, drawing and
painting and printmaking, etc.. And the sheer marvel of the
huge sheets of gorgeous paper with the beautifully executed
calligraphy is worth the effort to see and the presentation
of the huge landscapes sandwiched in the plexiglas.... The
computer installation where you could type things in and see
them projected in the square calligraphy was fun, as was the
interactive area where you could try your hand at
calligraphy.
His website is pretty cool, by the way: www.xubing.com

Russell, yes! I was in The Basement several years ago when a
man named Rocky showed us around and showed us pots. I was
with a small group from a pottery class. We had a guided
tour by someone else in the galleries and then descended
several floors below ground level to Heaven. When he started
taking pots out of the glass cases and placing them on a high
table, we stood reverently rapt. When he said that he asked
us not to touch one particularly ancient and fragile piece, I
was thunderstruck, not having known that we could pick them
up, fondle them, turn them over.... you mean we can HOLD
them????? Those wonderful Oribe trays!! Bottles, and all??
It was something like a religious experience. The pots that
I had pored over in Louise Cort's "Seto and Mino Ceramics"
were right there!! He even took one out of the case because
I particularly loved it--a sake bottle with a gorgeous drip
down the side. It was absolutely wonderful. Oh, I want to
go back again.

Dear Luke,

I am coming to DC to see if it would be a place I could live in. I am
sending my resume to the dc school district - I have an elementary education
degree. For now, it seems my ceramic days are over. I need to get a life
and income soon and I have been unable to put this complicated life back
together since my move to and back from california. I guess it is time to
move on. Thanks for responding.

Linda
