plate stands!

Hey Becky, I've calmed down enough to tell you that I
got some great plate stands at Target, and Pier 1
Imports. The Target ones were actually wooden easels,
but Pier 1 has black and silver metals, and a few
different styles. Fairly inexpensive, too (well, not
that six dollars is cheap, but compared to their
barstools I've been drooling over, they're cheap). I
really stocked up, as you can sometimes sell them to
customers (saw some in galleries for twice what I
paid). Happy hunting! Jules

Pier One sells iron stands in three different sizes. They come in your
choice of
black or silver. They have a nice curly cue design on the front. The black
ones
look real nice with my raku. I buy them for $3 to $5, depending on the
size. If
a customer wants to buy a stand along with a plate, I double the price and
charge
$6 to $10 for them. No one ever blinks. The only draw backs are they are a
little heavy if you are transporting a lot of them to shows and if they
happen to
get tangled during transport they can be a little of a pain to get separated
again.

Hello,

I don't know a source for metal plate stands, but I do know a good source
for acrylic (clear) stands.

Sapir Studios
1215 W Devon Ave.
Chicago, Ill. 60660

I don't have anything to do with them, but I have used their plate stands
for years and they are quite nice and sturdy (travel well too).

Thank you,
Chris Jones

I have the same plate stand need. Here are two phone numbers of wholesale
iron stands, however the minimum order is $200.00. When living in Columbia,
South Carolina, clay friends pooled their orders to make the required
amount.
The stands are sturdy, yet graceful.

Pier One carries these wrought iron stands but only in three sizes.

will be out mid May)

They will be happy to send you a catalog.

Thank you to all who responded to my query about plate stands, never thought
such a simple thing would be so semingly hard to find......hmmmm better pop
down to Pier One then!

The problem with finding suitable stands, is not only the diameter and
weight, but the depth (height from foot to rim) of the "plate" or
platter. Acrylic stands in various styles have taken the place of the
hinged Oriental type here, because they are easy to produce in a range
of sizes. I have not yet sourced affordable plate stands for the
larger / heavier range of work we exhibit. The ones I did find cost
serious money... £40+ each.

If you are looking for metal, I am afraid it will have to be custom
made. At least here in the UK it would be, but maybe you will be
luckier. I have known plates be broken by wedging into a stand, which
was too narrow measured from the front supports to the back support,
so some careful measurements and even a wooden prototype design will /
may be necessary... Then find someone who can make it for you.

I personally think this is a niche market ripe for exploitation. Large
plate or platter hangers is also another rarity, which someone could
make a fortune at providing. Maximum size available here, is for a
very shallow, light-weight 12-inch plate. Anything bigger or heavier
and one has to construct a hanger using wires and springs taken from
other holders. It is highly unsatisfactory, but apparently beyond
manufacturer's abilities.

I saw some plate stands at the Merchandise Mart in Dallas years ago while on
a buying trip for the store. I recently made some copying that design.
Easy
to do and, I think, nicer than those store bought types. The homemade are
less obtrusive and they are cheap. Make with two strips of wood ( about 5/8
x 5/8 inches) of desired length. Connect those two pieces with two dowels
about 4 or 5 inches long then put two short dowels standing up in the front
and two dowels sticking up about three-fourths of the way back the length of
the strips of wood. By drilling several sets of holes in the front it is
easy to adjust the holder for different pots by moving the dowels from one
set of holes to the next. Spray the stand black or white and you have as
good
a stand as you could want. At least for most pots. If you have a drill
press this is a very easy project.

Yes, I've ordered from them for over a dozen years. Great product. Ira
used to do the show circuit way back when and developed the line of display
products to use with his own work. (He's a glass blower and makes huge
plates.) They're very good, fairly priced. I've always got several dozen
on hand (customers to the studio or at shows want to buy them with my
piece), and a pile of his brochures to pass out. In addition to the numbers
mentioned below, their fax number is 773-465-3465.
It's a family operation. Patience, patience...keep trying.

Bad thing about computers is they make us all think everyone is waiting
around for their call, and they need instant response or feedback. That's
funny, coming from potters...a lengthy time process to get a finished
product as ever I saw. When someone calls me with an order, the soonest
they ever see it is two or three months.

Best,

Did a search using the terms: "Sapir Studios" and got the
Sapir Plate stands Catalogue entry as the first "hit".

It's part of the Minnesota Clay web site:
http://www.mm.com/mnclayus/

If you start from the MC home page (above):
Click on button, scroll down,
click on "Kiln Shelves, Furniture, Safety
Supplies, Spray Booths & Plate Stands"
(You need Adobe Acrobat Reader [downloadable])
Use Binoculars button to enter search for "plate stand"

but...

here's the direct URL to the Sapir Plate Stands:
http://www.mm.com/mnclayus/15refrac.pdf

No guarantees that they are in stock, but the company is
more likely able to answer enquiries in a timely manner...
