Because so many other potters do.
Because the wheel won't turn the other way.
Because your teacher is right handed.
Because the earth spins counter clock wise.
Because left handed throwing is weird.
Because I can't do it.
Because people always say, "You're a lefty!"

I'm a lefty and I've always thrown with the wheel going the
usual counterclockwise. No problem. I don't see why the other
way would be better for lefties. I consider the hand inside the
pot(my left hand) to be just as important as the outside hand,
if not more so.

BUT: This discussion has got me thinking about trimming. I hold
my trimming tool in my left hand and trim on the right side of
the pot. I suppose you could consider this backwards!

I think I'll try trimming clockwise and see how it goes.....

I don't think there any overpowering reasons for throwing with one hand or
the other. One should throw with whichever hand and in the direction that
is comfortable. If you are left handed, your are left handed and forcing
yourself to be right handed simply goes against the grain. Why try to
justify a natural ability within yourself?
