Three Australian Potters will lead a four-day wood fire workshop at Jeff
Oestreich's Pottery hosted by Northern Clay Center.

Dates: May 16-19 (Thursday-Sunday)
Fee: $320 ($300 NCC members)
Housing is not provided
Space is limited

Australian potters Greg Crowe, Sandy Lockwood and Neil Hoffmann are visiting
the US for a six-week residency at Jeff Oestreich's pottery in Taylors
Falls,
MN. they come from three different areas of Australian (Greg from Perth in
the far West; Sandy from just south of Sydney in the East; and Neil from
Tasmania). Between them they fire 9 wood kilns of various types. They all
exhibit and teach widely and will use this workshop to share their
experiences and methods with clay and woodfire.

Participants should bring enough bisque ware to fill 4 cubic feet of the
wood
kiln, built by Northern Clay Center on Jeff Oestreich's property. Glazes
will be provided, but participants may bring their own. It will be a cone
10/11 firing.

Workshop program will include discussions and hands-on experiences to cover
the fundamentals of firing with wood. The three instructors offer a great
range of knowledge of clay bodies, slip formulation, firing techniques..
There will be information conversations around the kiln and during the
firing, as well as more formal slide presentations from each of the three
Australian potters.

It is planned to pack the kiln using a variety of methods: tumble stacking,
wadding for decorations, packing with straws and grasses, upside down
placement, use of firebox floor, etc.

The kiln will be unpacked on Sunday afternoon, concluding with an analysis
of
the kiln's contributions to the fired works. The workshop will conclude
with
an Australian feast provided by Sandy, Neil and Greg.

Thursday, May 16th: Glaze and Load
Friday, May 17th: Firing Day
Saturday, May 18th: Cooling, Rest, Conversations, Slide Presentations and

This is a rare opportunity indeed. I have been working with these Aussies
for three weeks now and urge anyone who can to take advantage of this
opportunity to learn, share and talk pots.

Malcolm,

What kind of kiln does Jeff have and are there any pictures of works fired
in that kiln?

Thank you!

Tony,

The wood kiln is a cross-draft catenary arch about 40 cubic feet packing
space. The Australians have just fired and unstacked their first firing
with great results - warm shinos and slips and plenty of ash. Work from
two firings will be on show at the St. Croix Valley Studio Tour, May 11/12
from 10am-5pm. Come along and see the workd and the kiln and talk to the
Australians. We're having a great time. Their workshop will be a rare and
memorable one, indeed.
