bodies?

I've read with interest this thread about Manganese in claybodies. I
purchased recently a sample clay kit from Laguna clay which included a
wonderful brownish/black cone 5 clay (WC391--B-3 Brown) that contains
manganese and Iron. Today was the first time I used this clay and I wore
latex gloves when handbuilding with it. If I wear gloves to avoid absorption
into my skin, stay away from my electric kiln during firing, would there be
any risk involved?

sort of takes the fun out of working with this clay.

You cannot absorb manganese though the skin!
I believe Edouard Bastarache on this, and he
is a genuine professional expert on these
types of hazards. We are fortunate to have
his expertise available, and we should use it.

Refer to Edouard's recent posting in the
archives, which synopsized the relevant current
research. Go to the source.

We have enough actual hazards to avoid without
wasting energy on long-disproven rumors.

Concentrate instead on having very good kiln
ventilation or staying far away. Manganese
fumes are a very real health hazard.

(Please note: fumes do not vanish magically
when the kiln sitter trips! Ventilate the kiln
room well before returning.)

Studio dust is certainly a danger - best to keep everything very clean as
the clay dust will easily be stirred up - using a central vacuum will move
the dust outside - other kinds will tend to stir it up as will heating and
cooling air and fans.
