Howdeeee,

When substituting Ball Clay for Kaolin, what needs to be changed in the
recipe. (Cone 10 reduction). If anyone has any ideas, websites or books
that can help I would be very greatful!!!!!!

Ball clay generally has more silicon dioxide than kaolin, so you might have
to cut down the amount of added silica in the kaolin-containing recipe. To
do an exact duplication, you need to do it at the molecular level. However,
if there's not a lot of clay in the recipe, say 5% or so, you might not
notice any difference in surface quality in a straight-across substitution.
Where you might notice more difference is in the color. Ball clay has about
twice as much iron as kaolin, so clear and white glazes may be a bit darker
or muddier. In colored glazes, you probably wouldn't notice much
difference.
