misc glaze tests

Hi Clayart,

I have been overhauling my 4 year old website (what else can you do when you
fracture a tailbone?) and decided to put pictures up of my recent glaze
tests. I don't have the recipes linked yet..it is on the to-do list.

I had one startling test, that I just loved--Where Sapphire Blue Ron Roy
Revision met Xavier's Ron Roy Revision. Let me know if you can see enough
detail. I was using a different digital camera. For those of you who don't
have web access, I will try to get the results posted to Clayart later this
week.

Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons

Nikki;

Your photos are nice and the detail shows up very well. The pictures load
quite quickly too. Let us know when you have some more tests up, this looks
good.

Nikki,

Just got back from your website with all the glaze tests. WOW! COOL! The
sapphire is lovely and I like the effects of blending Xavier with Sapphire.

Keep up the good work.

First ever I have heard of adding boiling water to a glaze mix and living
dangerously enough to not seive... Hm-m-m-m. :o)

Ivor,

Are you joking? If not, I do not detect any subtle merchandising ploy. The
amount of information R&J have shared and continue to share for free is
worth, I would say, a book. And surely the 1000's of folks and students who
have not bought R&J's book are benefiting from the research clay arters are
carrying out and sharing with anyone who subscribes to this list. Sounds
like a counter, shot yourself in the ass or was it foot-merchandising ploy
to me. It also sounds like an expotential freeby for those folks who
haven't bought the book either. So, I hope you were joking.

I detect a trend in Reverse Psychology at work in postings which reference
the titles of the glazes of that newly published book which raised some
controversial discussion when it was published.

Quite a subtle merchandising ploy. Wonder if we have a couple of potential
millionaires as list subscribers?

Best regards,

Ivor

Hello Ivor
These anonymous fellows who wrote the kind of book, you say, desert it.
Imagine to yourself, 20 years ago, before the Internet time,
information would not spread around so fast. Many times, I think to
myself, why should I buy a book when I can download
information/pictures with much lower cost from the net.

When I site in a car, next to the driver, I try not to bother him. A
happy driver will bring me home safety.

These fellows, you write about, I hope they will be wealthy, because
they contribute a lot to our list
If they would be hungry , they will not have time to share, a lot of
"free knowledge" with our community

Like you do too
Like I do also

Ah, Ivor, don't we wish! While sales of the book continue to be beyond our
wildest dreams, we are still a few light years away from the financial
achievement you suggest. But since you gave me an opening, I would like to
give an update to all Clayart members since you, collectively, are the
parents of our book.

We have sold well over 2000 copies and have passed our break even point. I
think we may even be approaching earning about 50=A2 per hour for our
time--that's probably Canadian cents though. 39 or 40 pottery-related
businesses are carrying the book in North America including some Clayart
members we know well like The Potters Shop and Axner's. A complete listing
is on our web site. We are still looking for distributors in Europe and Oz,
although we have shipped quite a few copies to those parts of the world fro=
m
sales made on our web site.

We will begin advertising the book in Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly in th=
e
May/June and June issues respectively. Of course it was already reviewed i=
n
CM and we are hopeful reviews will appear in 3 other journals between now
and the end of the year.

We have become strong proponents of self-publishing. We learned a lot and
it has been a ball. We were very fortunate to find an outstanding printer
about 20 minutes from Ron's home so Ron can take his pocket magnifier over
there and stand at the end of the press to assure a high quality
product--although this printer is so good Ron is hardly needed in that role=
.
If any Clayarter is considering self-publishing we would be happy to answer
questions--it is clearly not for everyone, but it has really worked well fo=
r
us.

And if the "controversial discussion" was a "subtle merchandising ploy" or
just dumb luck or isn't having any effect at all, well, you'll just have to
guess. There's no law against a couple of country boys lucking out and
doing a good marketing job is there?? Where's Chris Campbell? Is there an=
y
law against that Chris? I think at least as important is that our glazes
seem to actually work in other peoples hands--Alisa's wonderful post a few
days ago gave ample testimony to that--glazes can travel between potters
pretty well.

Anyway--enough--thank you all for your ongoing support and if the mayor wil=
l
allow it we'll give you an update every few months.

The angel choir is singing. I have never ever bitten in to that thing
about recipes traveling badly. They travel as most other things do. Mostly
in tact, sometimes wrinkled and sometimes just lost. But recovered again
if important enough to spend time searching for. Part of the journey,
right? I am looking at some good glaze samples with some subs I made. I
have to use the materials available here, because I would have to charge a
lot for a pot made with Frit 3134, that I spent an airline ticket on to
get. So far, so good.

I am satisfied.

best regards from Alisa in Denmark

PS.
It is gray here and the flowers look sad under the gray sky. But, I look
forward to the summer day that will come, you know, when you are hanging
out the wash and clipping it to the line, and all at once you look up, arms
up, and there you are, standing, alive, the sky is blue, the sun is
shining, summer clouds and the smell of salt water. I am ready! Today's
energy sponsored by a some dark brown clay that I think is beautiful in
color and great to throw.
