Yes, my pneumatic extruder is the Bailey. I'm still in the exploration =
stage and was helped considerably by Peter in Florida when we set it up. =
My air-compressor isn't large. We have a much bigger (and noisier) =
model in the woodshop, but this one is small and compact .... easy to =
manage. Maximum PSI
125 according to the literature, though the gauge reads 200 PSI. I =
usually run it around 80, or whatever it is that Bailey recommends in =
HIS literature. =20

My problem in the beginning was clay that was too stiff.... terrible =
time extruding .... warped a couple of large dies, maybe irreparably. =
Very disappointing. Then I softened my clay before using and the =
problem solving mode was done.

I soften my bagged clay by poking holes through the 25 lb block with a =
dowel, pouring=20
water in the holes, closing the bag and wrapping with a beach towel and =
waiting for a day or two. In the desert, it's necessary to take extra =
precautions in order to avoid drying. Sometimes the water dries up =
between the sink and the punctured holes if you don't move swiftly .... =
desert folk have to be tough.

Another "problem" that I didn't anticipate concerned the steel pan on =
the bottom of the extruder ..... that alone required about 25 lbs of =
clay. I thought sure as shootin' the dratted extruder was somehow =
eating my clay. Talked to Peter again and he kindly explained ..... =
that the clay is after all "compressed" and the whole 25 lb block will =
fit in that square metal box.... so be sure to have considerable clay =
softened and ready beforehand ..... whatever "considerable" is in your =
language..... in mine, it's never enough.

In the Mojave goin' out to the studio to mix some more copper =
purple..... talking with Cat Jaroz today reminded me that I quit =
experimenting/testing the percentages of copper purple with copper red =
.... found that I liked my first test of 25% to 75% .... and never =
completed the task .... who knows? the next ones may make the first look =
pathetic.... If you want the recipies, get Tom Coleman's
"Glazes I Use".... paperback, around $20.00..... lots of tips..... good =
book. I think he has an updated copy out now, but haven't seen =
it.........

I am currently in the market for an extruder and would appreciate any advise,
as to manufacturer.
Thanks

Susan;

Scott Creek makes an excellent extruder, with an iron frame and aluminum
barrel and dies. The round barrel is easier to clean than a square one, and
the fact that it is aluminum means that it won't rust, making it ideal for
working with porcelain or other white claybodies.

We've got two in stock at Pine Ridge; come on down and take a look at them.
We've also got a multi-shape die for handles and a hollow-die kit for
tubular extrusions. The extruder itself includes several aluminum die
blanks as well.

Susan
Peter Pugger makes excellent deairing pugger/mixers, in several sizes PM100,
PM50, VPM30,VPM 20.. Go to www.peterpugger.com to have a read about them.
Mine is theVPM30 and is wonderful. I don't use it for mixing as much as
reclaiming, or even just getting new boxes to good consistency for working
with. I've only had it for just over a year, but it's been working pretty
solidly and is exactly what I needed. Saves war and tear on my arthritic
hands. Wish I'd had is a long time ago!

Have used a Brent for many years with my students and it has survived
them very well. Decided to replace it as it has a system where the
plunger is attached by means of tension against a pipe. This has a
tendency to slip quite suddenly and several of my students have been
hit in the head, though I advised them not to stand directly under
the plunger arm.
Also have a Randall, a big thing. Holds about 12lbs. of clay. Makes
large and small hollow forms.
Was thinking about a Northstar, but some folks complained about the
"Z" brace for the inner die causing problems.
Finally chose the Scott Creek. It has a slotted system to put in the
plunger arm which will be much safer for my students. I think it will
be heavy enough to suit our needs. Was looking at the Bailey, but the
budget said no.

Oh! So I'm not the only one! Mine seems to bend out of shape no matter how hard I
try to treat it carefully. Would anybody else having this problem please let me
know and tell me what might help?
