electric with computerized controls

I'm not very experience with electronic controls on electric kiln. We
just got one at the school I teach at. I was in Indianapolis at the
Indy Arts Center the other day and noticed that the three Amaco
electrics each had the control panel swung open. Is this standard
procedure among the cogniscenti?
I'm guessing it is for added cooling. Does it prolong controler life?

Leaving the kiln's electrical box door open may prolong the life of
the controller, but I would not recommend the practice. The wires
inside the box are dangerous.

If you have a grid or perforated metal sheet top and bottom of the box,
it would not be too difficult to attach a Computer cooling fan to the
bottom and cool the whole box of tricks effectively without having to
open the door.
I've noticed the control box on my top loader does get a trifle warm!
