hey karen,
this semester i am teaching an extruded ceramics class. we just got two
new bailey power extruders and they are toooooooo cool. they are rather
costly but simply a pleasure to work with. we have two of the power
extruders, the 4", 5" and the 9" barrels. very easy to clean, easy to set
up, easy to manage because you operate them with your foot and it leaves
your hands free to guide the extrusion. they are very cool. want any more
info just give me a call in the office. 915-837-8405

Hi,

You want the stainless steel North Star. When I did my student
teaching--stood up to 700 ceramic students a week! You just need to be
careful to not stick very firm clay in the extruder. Can make own dies as
well.

Karen;
The best one to buy depends on what you want to do with your new
extruder, how large a piece you intend to extrude and how much of it
are you going to do. (production, your main tool, or only for some
handles and coils).
A little more information would allow those on list to better answer
your question, as there are many different styles of extruders.

At school we have a North Star, a Brent, and a Bailey with an extension box.
The students invariably head for the North Star.

Hi:
I can't give you comparisons but can tell you that I purchased and installed
a North Star Extruder and find it efficient, very well designed and very
sturdy. Of course, the extruder must be fastened very securely to insure
its
ability to withstand the strong pressure of forcing soft clay through the
dies provided by North Star as well as any dies you may create yourself. (I
lightly spray the inside of the clay receptacle dwith WD/40 before inserting
the clay to ease the pressure needed to make smooth extrusions.)

Good luck!

i have a north star extruder but i wouldn't buy another one. it works great
if you can get baby poo soft clay but i rarely can and at the stiffness that
is perfect for throwing the thing gets very constipated. practically gives
you a hernia and or hemroid getting it to extrude.

spoken like the old nurse that i am.

I absolutly agree. I made a big mistake. Have used it only twice because
of the
pressure required to extrude anything.. Anyone want to buy one cheap? Sam
