This is probably a repeat question. I have read
several views on what everyone thinks about the new
HVLP spray gun from harbor freight for $99.99 (model
number 45096-0VGA).
However i don't see anyone saying that they used it
and are happy with it. Anyone using this particular
spray gun?? We would like your opinion.

Thanks
Charan

Got the gun from George Koller and will be trying it out in the next few
days. Will report on my reaction then.

Hi,

yes, i have used. originally wrote in to ClayArt asking
if anybody had tried about any true HVLP and didn't
get an answer but got more questions. I ended up
purchasing the thing for $69.99 (you should still be
able to get that price) and had pretty good luck but
ONLY USED IT ONE TIME, AND FOR TILES.

i honestly thought it was pretty "nifty" once I had a
little bit of a hang to it. i really liked the idea of not
having/needing a compressor (noisy/expensive/moisture
etc etc) so put me down as positively biased, i'll admit
that. the constant airflow has to be gotten used to and
adjusted for but i simply raised the gun and that issue
went away.

on the plus side, i've written this before, the replacement
part on that gun is only 2.50 or something. heck, but they
wanted $50 or so 5 years ago for my sharpe. i'll stand up
side down to avoid that kind of thing, even at my age.

The gun is not much. kind of a disappointment but
when you think about it, it just has some very nice
basic advantages like an oversize nozzle (for impurities),
easy to clean.

I've been anxiously waiting for kurt, rachel rice, ellen
marks, and another clayarter or two to report but for
various reasons no reports yet. kurt is closing in on
it and should be able to give his feedback soon.

Charan:

I just purchased the Harbor Freight spray gun but I bought the cheaper model for
$69.99. My first experience was very frustrating because I couldn't get used to
the high volume of air that it constantly blows out and it kept chipping my first
layer of glaze off as I was spraying the second glaze on. It really blows
forcefully like a leaf blower. There isn't alot of over spraying past what you're
spraying but alot sprays directly around your pottery piece. I changed from
putting my pieces on a ceramic tile to a screen on a frame which eliminated my
need to constantly clean the over spray between pieces. After talking to George
Koller a few times, I got some good advice and adjusted the gun and moved further
away from my piece so that my second experience was better. I still did not have a
great result the second firing because I clearly didn't get enough glaze on some of
my pieces. It has been difficult getting the right consistency. They improved in
consistency the more spraying I did. I think it has potential for my needs for
getting glaze on large pieces quickly with less waste than the sand blaster gun I
had been using and much quicker than the critter type I have also tried but
doesn't seem suitable for any detailed glazing. I'll report again after I have
used it a few more times.

First let me say that the spray gun in question can be seen
at http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=44677

Second, a very excellent commentary by Rachael Rice sent to George Koller
and forwarded to me seems to say it all. I quote here parts of what she
wrote:

"........My glaze applied thicker and gave good results. Not allot of
overspray, I think I am getting the hang of it. So all in all, Ithink it
will work satisfactorily for my needs, quick application on large
pieces. There is a definite learning curve. ... good coverage in a short
amount of time ........"

Now my (Kurt Wild) comments. I have used the gun only twice but feel that
it will be my gun of choice from now on. My first sprayed piece was small,
only 10" tall. The second piece was 24" tall. I found that the amount of
material was easily adjusted to fit the size of each of the pots. For my
large piece I had it set so quite a bit of material was coming out. I
found that the whole spraying of the large piece took far less time than
with my siphon spray gun which operates from a compressor with a storage
tank.

The HVLP does not require a compressor - an advantage for those who do not
already own one. A disadvantage is the fact that the unit is quite noisy
but not any noisier than when my compressor kicks on. I think the HVLP is
a great value for the money.

I must agree with Rachael in that there is some learning involved. George
has been after me to report on the sprayer so I am doing so now based on my
limited use of it yet I am very positive about the unit.

And I would say, relative to the amount of material set to spray and the
viscosity (thickness) of the glaze, some experimenting will be required for
one to get the gun to meet one's own needs. This is not a gun for detail
work --
it is a good gun for spaying a full pot. When Rachael says, "I now only
want to spray instead of dipping." you know she is happy with it --- as I
am! I have no personal or financial interest in Harbor Freight Tools or
the gun itself - just trying to provide my personal comments.

What else can I say? Contact me off list if you have questions as I tend
to zip through Clayart on some days and I could miss someone's question.

Kurt
