smoke firing in an electric kiln, watkins method

Someone was saying that they saw Watkins use toilet paper in a tight fitting
can. I'd just like to add that I tried this a few times and don't use CHEAP
toilet paper. It leaves a lot of marrs (especially the kind of cheap toilet
paper found at large universities). Softer toilet paper tended to leave a
less marred surface.

Also, if memory serves, Watkins uses terra sigs post bisque to achieve his
balcks.

Yes Jeff, you are correct. James Watkins does use terra sigillata on his
cone 06 bisque fired pieces. His book says he then buffs the surface with a
chamois. On some of the work I saw he also applied white crackle and copper
glazes in contrast to the black areas.

How does he control the shrinkage of the terra sig on the already-shrunk bisque? I
would assume the terra sig would shrink more than the bisque during the smoke
firing. I'll try this out and see what happens.

I have tried pots that did not have terra sig and pots that did AND for the most
consistent results and for DEEP blacks use terra sig.

If you bisque fire the pots first and then apply the terra sig, polish the pot with
a soft cloth. Then do a firing--I fire at cone 019 because you will start to see a
loss of the shine as the temperature goes up.

Hope this helps.

It needs to be applied thinly.
