dishwasher glaze test.

I am wanting to test a glaze for durability in a dishwasher.
Fortunately I do not have one. So, I was wondering if I
bought some dishwasher detergent and placed a vessel
in a cooking pot (stainless steel), and boiled it for a bit,
would this simulate a dishwasher and give me an idea
if the glaze is dishwasher durable? Any suggestions as to
how long to let it boil and what concentration of detergent
to use. Or is this a case of just try it and see what happens.

If this test is too aggressive, then I may discard a good glaze,
and if it not, then I may have a false impression as to its
durability.

Thanks in advance

Hi Al,

You can try 5% soda ash simmered for 6 hours. This is similar (but not
identical) to an ASTM test (C614-74) that is used on the porcelain enamels
that line dishwashers and washing machines. Soda ash is a component of many
dishwasher detergents. It is a pretty vigorous test. There is more
information on it in our book Mastering Cone 6 Glazes.

Regards,

John
