cone 6 glaze--granular illmenite, base glaze ?'s

Hi Valerie,
When you made your first post, I immediately thought
of gran. illmenite too. It's funny because I ran the
same test, same base glaze (Hanson 5x20) a few months
ago and got the same result! It was like finely spaced
sandpaper, ouch. Duh!
However, I have used gran. illmentie in other bases,
and it made a smooth gloss speckled glass. Why would
it work in one base and not another? I was under the
impression that it is not involved in the glass, other
than being suspended in it. Any ideas? Yes in
reduction the iron would flux, but cone 6 ox.?
Did you get a speckle you liked with gran. rutile or
mang.?
Funny thing about the tests on that base, the glaze
was quite soft. I could write my name in it with a
stoneware shard. But, I got some very cool color
responses, especially after cooling adjustments. I
suspect (blindly guess) the good color and crystals
come from the high borosilicate levels. Perhaps this
also explains the softness of the glaze?
Just full of guesses today,

Kathy
