Dear O'Brien Tyrrell,

Of Susan Petersons books, "The Craft and Art of Clay" is a basic =
overview of what can be done and how to do it with photo essays and lots =
of illustrations of ancient and modern works. It also includes photo =
runs of some of the more notable 20Ct potters. It could be one of those =
"I'm going to teach from this" texts which college teachers sometimes =
use to lock step their students into a learning pathway (tonight I want =
you to read, learn and inwardly digest....). I have reservations about =
the inclusion of page after page of test tiles. Takes away the chance to =
find your own way by learning from direct experience with kilns and =
materials which are available. But I am comfortable with the rest, =
except that I avoid scoring clay when I join part together.

I recall the other as a collection of illustrations with text similar to =
"How the Great Masters do...." If your Daughter needs a second text to =
augment the first one this may be all right, but if not she might be =
better served by delving into your extensive library of books and =
collection of back issues of CM and PMI.

Wishing her every success with this course,

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.
