how recipes look on clayart

When I post recipes to Clayart, I type them as neatly as I can, but they
come out crooked, with the numbers not lining up in rows. I have looked at
the same postings at the Yahoo Groups site for Clayart, and they look fine.
And when I mail the message to myself, it looks fine.

Anyone have any tips for getting the recipes, or any kind of lists or
charts, to look decent on Clayart?

Anne

Same request below..as to how you take the Insight software numbers and
insert them into your text as references?

Hi Chris ,

I hope I am interpreting your question correctly. here is how I do it. In
INSIGHT click on file, report type, the type of report you want, (i.e.
standard, side-by-side) then highlight the text, all of it and copy to the
clipboard, (ctrl-C). In the body of the email, paste either by hitting the
paste button or ctrl-v. the numbers do not line up in a perfect line but
it is legible. Is this what you wanted?

Margaret

The problem is using a proportional font -- one that has a different width
for every letter. Apparently you use Courier or something similar in your
e-mail, except when receiving mail from a list like Clayart, where
formatting is turned off. Formatting allows the receiver of the message to
copy the font selection of the originator, but lists don't use it because
of the occasional problems it gives. So we have to live with this byproduct.

Fortunately, the fix is fairly simple: just select a non-proportional font
in your email viewer to change the viewing font to a typewrite or teletype
font, and you should see all the columns line up again.

The opposite problem can also occur: lining up columns using a
proportional font doesn't work, especially if you use tabs. Tabs are
usually converted to spaces, and the proportional space is usually much
smaller than the non-proportional space (1em). So, since the tab is gone,
and the space is inconsistent, this doesn't work too well. You can look at
Mishy Lowe's signature for an example. The best solution here is to type
your columns in a typewriter font, and leave it to the viewer to adjust by
changing fonts at the other end. Otherwise, the information needed to make
the columns line up is lost when the formatting is lost.

So the rules are:
1. No tabs
2. Use a non-proportional (teletype, typewriter, Courier, Agate, etc.) font.
3. Adjust columnar material when viewing by selecting a non-proportional
viewing font. Any will do if rules 1 and 2 were followed.

It is probably that you are using a proportional font (each letter is a
different width) and it is being converted to a non-proportional. Use the
font "Courier" and you should have no problems.
