snide remarks/ the artists way

One of the exercises in the 'Artists Way' (If I'm remembering this right,
don't take this verbatim) is thinking into you past about people/situations
that might have squashed your creative self.

I created two pictures in school. One to give to my mom, the other to give
to my father and stepmother (my mom the citified blue-collar single mom, my
father and stepmother the country hippies). So I show my mom the picture
that I plan to give to my dad. I don't even remember it. I showed my mom
the picture I made for her. I remember it so well. It was a pastel of a
stone cottage surrounded with flowers.

She looked at them both and said "You always give your father the good one."

Another mom story:

My mom came to visit last fall for thanksgiving. So, thanksgiving morning,
we're getting ready and I shower, dress, and do my hair (as much as I ever
do my hair). I go upstairs to say hey to mom and she says "I'll watch Nate
(my son) for you while you do your hair"
I replied, "I've already done my hair." She makes this face, I can't even
describe it and says "Oh.... it looks nice!"
