report: holes in kiln shelves

Well I'm one happy person. The holes drilled in the kiln shelves evened the
firing temp out from top to bottom. A very easy fix. I used a 5/8 in. drill
bit in a drill press, a little water and a mask. Drilled the holes about 2
inches apart.

The only problems I see are that you can't use sand on the shelf under a big
platter and if you had a glaze that ran badly, it might drip down through the
shelf.

I've heard that firing half shelves staggered by two inches evens
out the firings, too. (i.e. on one side, the shelves are two inches
higher than shelves on the other side.)

How many holes did you drill?

Thanks,

Arnold,

Yes, staggering the shelves does work, but it limits how much you can get in
the kiln. My kiln is small, 18 X 24 octogon, so I need all the room I can
get. Each shelf has between 29 to 30 holes. My kiln is small but it suits
my work load. Sometimes I just have to fire every day. Now that the heat
has evened out, I am going to have to tweek my firing schedule some.
