My question is if anyone has a 12 cubic foot downdraft propane kiln, or =
something similar, what is their firing schedule for bisque and cone 10 =
glaze fire? I am just trying to fine-tune my firing to save $, and I am =
not real clear on how long and how low to keep the temps at the =
beginning of each firing. =20

Thank you so much for any help you can give me, or any website to go to =
learn more about this.

Thank You,

My kiln is a Minnesota Flat Top, downdraft, measuring 21.3 cubic ft.
overall inside, with 10 cubic ft. setting space, propane fired to cone 9 -
10..

I use 10 gallons of propane for a bisque firing. I turn on my two pilots
and run them overnight to warm things up - the kiln is in an uninsulated
steel building. In the morning the kiln is at around 250 degrees F. The
rest of the firing usually takes 5 hours but I can take 6 if I am
particularly concerned about some of the pieces.

A glaze firing in a single day takes about 7 to 8 hours.

An alternate firing: I light the kiln at around 4 PM and turn the kiln up
3 times so it's between 800 -900 degrees F. when I go to bed (10 - 10:30
PM). The kiln will reach about 1150 to 1200 degrees by 7 AM when I turn
the gas full on. In roughly 15 minutes my kiln temp has climbed to 1650
when I start reduction. I continue with a light reduction for the rest of
the firing and generally finish between 4 & 5 hours after beginning the
reduction. My propane usage for a glaze firing has been as low as 20
gallons but never more than 25. Note: It's hard to get an accurate reading
as my house is on the same tank and the tank gauge is such that a precise
reading is not possible.
