feriz reminded some of us that newspaper has a great
deal of clay in it.

if you are firing big pots, he claims that just a piece
of newspaper under the pot will give you a nice cushion.

same for porcelain. the ash is almost unseen.
but a nice cushion.

Newsprint does not contain clay filler,
glossy magazines & photocopy paper do.
In using filled paper there is a tendency
for the residue to curl up & touch the pot.

I regularly use newsprint under large flat bottomed pots both at biscuit -
1000C and in glaze at 1100C. Never any problems apart from cleaning up the
ash from the shelves after the firing.

Doesn't this give off a lot of smoke?

There is some smoke but with the door and window open it clears quickly.
In a firing I don't have many very large pots and so there is not a great
deal of paper burning slowly.
