OK, I'm glad I read the description first, used my time better.

Katheleen and fellow clayarters,
I found the Randall Session ridiculous, so much so that I left after about
the first ten minutes. It was based on a gross kind of humor, which I
usually dislike to begin with (though there could be a problem here since
I have been accused of not having a sense of humor anyway). I do not know
what the conclusion of the lecture was, so only that initial impression
will do.
The panel -- the person who showed the Mochica work gave us precious
little understanding of Mochica -- seems like it was just titillating
imagery without much substance. The woman who showed slides of her work,
bourdalou, etc. -- this was the only decent part of the presentation.
Question about what is erotic, etc. James what's his name (I don't have
my book anymore) -- Randall Session -- certainly better than the night
before, and I think that he did everyone a service by reiterating the need
to follow your heart with your work -- I suppose I would add to that to be
informed, and don't work from ignorance.
Which gets me to the Soldner poster this year. I'm sorry, but
-- from a feminist point of view, which is what concerns me here --
this poster, in my opinion, was disgraceful. Nudity does not bother me
very much, but the context here is clearly prurient.

If anyone out there wants to put in their 2 cents
about The Randall Session (and the accompanying panel
on Friday morning) I'd like to hear it...

I listened to a part of the Randall session. I found it
tedious and boring in the extreme. I prefer my humor to
have some wit in it. In truth, the part that I heard at
least seemed to be humor on about a 12-year old level.
Of course I didn't go to the Friday panel.

It would be interesting to hear a bit of what others have
to say. Many seemed to find it funny and worthwhile. I
just didn't.

Thanks for saying that, Dannon. I didn't go to the panel either.

I would like to point out in passing that this observation probably expressed the crux of the problem between what I have been trying to say and those that seem to disagree with me. If I walk out or stay away because I chose not to listen to this type of thing, then those who stay and enjoy it are guilty by association (or perhaps they think that that is what I am saying) On the
other hand, if I am uncomfortable with this kind of entertainment, then I am who Mr. Water is targeting (see below).
People can get upset both ways, why is one indignation (or condescension) better than the other?

I love stand-up comics who use self-deprecating humor, both personally =
and societally. And I enjoy laughing at myself and my human =
imperfections, hang-ups, frailties, biases, idiosyncrasies, fears, =
limitations, pre-conceived notions (stupidity), and contradictions.=20
John Waters' presentation at NCECA was hilarious beyond description. He =
skillfully manipulated my imagination, and catapulted me into an arena =
of boundless goofiness and irreverence. His playful absurdities were an =
obvious success: those individuals able to let go and laugh had a =
fabulous time, while those who could not, merely demonstrated exactly =
what his humor was targeting.

Now that I have experienced Waters' stand-up comedy, I will look at his =
films differently.

The Randall Session is a brilliant part of NCECA. It always stretches my =
appreciation of another (non-clay) creative avenue, and makes me deeply =
grateful to have art in my life.
