I learned this from Tom Nuegebauer. I raku in a gravel driveway. I plac=
e
old kiln shelves on the ground and surround them with a row or two of
bricks. I fill this shallow "pit" with soil. and top it off with sand.=
=

I put a mound of sawdust and make a depression in it with a piece of
broken kiln shelf in the depression for the pot to sit on. One person
opens the door of the kiln. another person takes the pot out with the
tongs and places it on the piece of broken kiln shelf. Another person
quickly covers the pot with a metal container with some hay stuffed in it=

that is just big enough to accomodate the pot with not too much extra
space. The metal container should be handled with gloves as it gets hot.=
=

As soon as you get the pot covered, twist the container into the sand to
seal it. sometimes you need to use protected hands or feet to push sand
around the edge of the container to completely seal it. For more crackle=

let the air hit the pot a little before you seal it into the reduction
container. For more reduction cover it fast. =

Better yet if you live in or near Milford PA or New Jersey, take =
a
raku class with Tom through the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in
Summitt. =
