[re: back yard raku/ use of sand=no smoke?]

we started this at Westrn Oregon University about a
year ago and it works great!!

Two differences though:
1. We leave a trench in the sand to allow air to flow
so we don't over-reduce copper glazes. After the
smoke puffs out of the trench two or three times we
cover the trench up with sand to seal the can.
2. We put the paper in the can first. Then we put
chicken wire over the paper so that when it is turned
upside down in the sand the paper doesn't directly
touch the piece. This allows you to get glazes with
no markings or scarring from the paper.
