This a repeat of a spray gun issue question/answer I wrote about around
July 01. If
harbor freight still has this spray gun I really recommend it.I use it
all the time
with no problems.

Sam

The question I'd like to see answered with more authority is:

"COULD A LOW END FAN BASED (BUT "TRUE") HVLP GUN
POSSIBLY BE GENERALLY "BETTER" FOR SOME/MANY
POTTERS THAN EVEN THE MOST EXPENSIVE COMPRESSOR
BASED SPRAY GUN"

So we don't confuse ourselves or others I suggest we call spray guns

using these terms based on the pressure at the nozzle.

Less than 10PSI: "True" or Fan/Turbine based HVLP

More than 10PSI : Compressor based HVLP if requiring
a compressor but claiming to be
"HVLP"

Sam,

My recent postings have NOT been about comparing Harbor Freight
Compressor based to any other compressed air based guns. Rather they
have been about the new low cost "true HVLP" guns that come as a
complete
system with a fan type blower. My contention has been that they could
represent an exciting and low cost opportunity for artists/potters that

don't already own a compressor (and water separators etc) to get into
spraying at a fraction of the compressor + filters + hose + spray gun
costs.

I have now used both units and comparing them is largely "apple and
oranges". You might like the non-compressor based HVLP better,
you might not. Who knows? The "fan" based "true" HVLP units
offer some intrinsic advantages that I tried to bring up. For one the
nozzle is much bigger, thus probably allowing for more glaze variations.

It is easier to clean. Perhaps the most important thing is that at a
total
entry cost of about $80 one can get on one's way and try it with
glazes
and find out first hand.

I think it will be of greater value to this list if we can get our terms

in some sort of order, and try get an "old hand" respected potter or
two to try one of this low-end but "true" HVLP units to see what
she/he has to say about it for mainstream potter usage. Unfortunately
my work is largely limited to tiles so I cannot even pretend to speak
for "mainstream potting", whatever that is.

ps We are sending my new fan based HVLP (complete system) gun to
Kurt Wild to test. Kurt may not be entirely "mainstream" but he
promised
me to be pretty old (hand).
