Dear Gavin Stairs,

An accurate description of the method I use. My spatula is a stainless =
steel, about one inch wide and eight inches long, such as is used by =
pastry cooks for icing cakes. I lick the heel of my hand and wipe the =
blade across to give a slight film of moisture. The alkali nature of =
saliva causes mild deflocculation of the clay and assists adhesion to =
the background clay.
