I was looking into buying a tent for retail shows and saw this canopy
with three sides for $199 on costco site. Has anyone bought a canopy
from COSTCO and can tell me how easy it is to put up and does it seem
durable? E-Z up's cost about three times as much with three sides
closed in, but I know they are easy to put up. Thanks

Hi Rachael!

I bought a booth tent at Costco, which has been used for a variety of
outdoor purposes. The 10' x 10' that we own has been used in the wind and
breeze, rain and fair weather. It will endure, as long as you take good care
of it.

I use the canopy annually in San Francisco (SF Pride Festival), where the
wind is blustery, and the weather may start out wet. I also use it here in
the desert, as a sun shield. After four years of use, it has served us well.
This canopy protects fairly well, and looks great, too.

A few caveats:

Take along a helper, since the canopy requires two folks to un-collapse it
and set up the "roof." Bring along tent stakes (for use on the ground), or
sandbags, for concrete/parking lot use, to weigh down each of the four legs.
The detents that hold the collapsable legs in place are a bit flimsy. Bring
along a nail for each leg, in case of detent failure. You don't want to lose
"de tent"!

Best wishes!

Dear Rachael,

I bought a 10x10 canopy from Sam's Club for
$199.00. It is an EZ-up with 3 sides. I used it
three times last summer, leaving it up at the fair
site three days in a row. It rained one night, but
the tent kept everything protected. I used a tarp for
the fourth side. It is very easy to put up and it
came with a bag with wheels on it. It's a great
set-up. I talked to a girl at one of the fairs that
had ordered her EZ-up mail-order. She paid three
times as much and it did not seem hers was any
different from mine, and she did not get any sides.
You have to be careful. I think you get
different things from different dealers. Good luck!

Don't have the Costco one but bought an E-Z up at Home Depot for $199 then
went over to the tarp aisle and bought three 9x12 silver tarps for about $8
each and got a package of grommet fasteners for $2.

I cut the long side of the tarp to slightly over 10 ft and folded an inch
over a couple of times to make a sturdy hem, grommeted it it attach to the
sides of the canopy. This saved me bundles of money as the pre-manufactured
canopy sides you normally can buy for the canopy was about $32 each.

I left my canopy up in my patio for several months straight, tied to cinder
blocks. It never blew over, formed any leaks, and the cheapy tarps didn't rip
or come loose from the grommets. Has been wonderfully sturdy. And when I used
it for craft shows this Xmas, I needed one other person to help put it up, (2
minutes) but as exhibitors pack and leave at different times, was able to
take it down by myself (3 minutes) without depending on or annoying someone
else absorbed in own stuff and wants to be on his way.

Whatever you do, get one that will not blow over easily. The booth next to me
was constantly threatening to blow over and the exhibitors would have to stop
in the middle of their sales pitch to hold the canopy down.
At the same craft show, I didn't bring anything to anchor my booth down.
(Too much to bring.) It didn't even move a ripple.
It did fit into my hatchback car -- with the rear seat folded down,
passenger seat pushed way forward, hatchback CLOSED! It is 5'1' long, folded
up.

I have both an 10x10 EZ up and one of the 10x10 Costco style.

The biggest difference is with the EZup the canopy is fastened permanently
(via screws) to the frame. The Costco style you set up the frame and then
attach the canopy (each time) with velco straps. It's not much extra work
and works quite well. The other key difference is the release pins on the
Costco style have a little wire attached which is much easier to release
than the push pin used on the EZup.

I'd go with the Costco style and save the dough.
