gas kiln firing down?

I have a gas kiln that is a updraft conversion from an old electric.
It works great, quite even, but it cools down really fast.
For oxidiation glazes I can fire down without any problem, but
I can't seem to fire down and keep it reducing. Is this even
possible? are there any tricks to doing it. ideas?

I'd like to build a very small gas kiln out of IFB (not more
than 12 cubic feet) and if possible re-use my burner assembly
(from summit kilns), but this would have the burners coming up
from the bottom. I haven't seen any designs that have that.
ideas? I've bought several kiln books, but they show the burners
coming in through the sides. ideas?

thanks,

Connie
