question re spooze joining dry clay

updated sat 19 jan 02

I haven't tried spooze yet, but I do have the recipe for it. I have an =
dry (greenware stage) bowl I've made and just realized the three 1/8" =
thick 1" round discs I put on for feet need to be a bit thicker. A =
portion of the incised/carved area at the bottom of the bowl touches =
bottom.

If I make three more discs and let it dry, will spooze let me join the =
two layers of dry clay together so I can bisque? Or, should I bisque it =
first and then join?

Marianne: Have you seen a recipe for paperclay? I think that might
work better. Whether you use paperclay or spooze,
I would attach the new feet in the pre-bisqued state.
You may hear from others who won't agree with me.

I agree with bacia. Mix some paper clay with toilet paper and your clay body. You
can throw in some vinegar and Karo syrup (spooge) if you like but not necessary.
Put everything back together and bisque fire it.
Good luck,
Marcia

Dear Marianne,
I agree with Bacia, that I prefer paper clay slip to Spooze. Main reason=20
is that the Spooze attracks too many wasps in the summer. But also, I=20
found that the paper slip worked very well, every time. The Spooze=20
sometimes needed several layers.

I only use the paper clay slip on dried greenware, never bisque. It could=
=20
work on bisque if you first wet the parts to be joined. But if you have=20
the possibility, I think you should join the parts green.

Paper clay slip is just your own clay watered down to a slip consistency=20
and add paper pulp. I have paper fibre but you can use toilet paper, for=20
example. Any recycled paper works well. Tear it up into small pieces and=
=20
set it down in a bucket with water. Take up the pulp and mash it on a=20
sieve to get the water out. Add it into your slip. I do not weigh or=20
anything, just add enough so I can see the pulp in the slip.
