what? being paid for images in a book??

This whole thing about being paid for images appearing in books is an old
topic which we have discussed before, but I do not hesitate to voice my
opinions again. Any of you who think you should be paid when images of your
work appear in books are completely missing the point, but that is fine.
Don't submit your slides, and someone else will get the wonderful free
visibility and publicity. The reality is that your ceramic work is the
valuable commodity, not the images of your work. The images are completely
worthless UNLESS PEOPLE SEE THEM, right? That is the whole reason we take
photographs of our work. So why the hell would anyone expect to be PAID for
images of their work which appear in a book? What a completely ridiculous
concept! Sorry for my vitriol, but I cannot BELIEVE that anyone would be so
blind as to insist on being paid for images appearing in a book. For
chrissake, they are doign you a HUGE SERVICE. Talk about cutting off your
nose to spite your face.
Okay, I'm done with my rant.

I understand both sides to this argument, but I lean more towards Vince's rationale
on this one.
There is pay, and there is pay. Value is measured in different commodities. The
book could be likened to entering a juried exhibit. Sometimes we PAY to be in
shows. Why? Simplistically, for the recognition and exposure. The difference is
that the image of your object will be around in book form for a lot longer than
most gallery shows. When I look at the wonderful pots in Peter Lanes books, I
begin to "know" and recognize some of the artists. Some I never would have known
any other way.

Vince - on the other hand, using this logic( >The images are >completely
worthless UNLESS PEOPLE SEE THEM, right?), then the fabulous fiction story I
have in my head is worthless until I get it published.....BUT....when it's
published, and people "see" the story (aka buy the book), I GET PAID! I
figure that we (the potters and their images) ARE the story that Lark wants
to publish---so why shouldn't we get paid for our "stories"? By the way,
this is all a moot point, as I have no story that's going to make it from my
head to paper, and I'm not submitting any photos of pots to be published
either. I'm just here to stir the pot...........

Another side of the coin............
I pay a fee to have my web site, pay fees/commissions for art shows, pay
printing/postage when I send out promotion.
I do not get paid when there's a photo of my work in a local publication, or
link on someone's web page or for that matter did anyone get paid for their
entry in ClayArt Cooks???
If the book were singularly about the work of one or a few artists then they
should be paid.
Promotion gets your name/work out there and free is good!
If I were published in any book I would have no problem having it displayed
in my booth...... more free promotion!

This is my theory and it is mine!
