Thanks for the suggestions....all of you who replied.....I will be =
checking them out and eventually will get something together so ya'll =
can come see me better....Yahoo sent me another email yesterday saying I =
was too popular...."Set up a free site with us so we can close it down =
if people come to see it"
As for backing stuff up......I'm into putting things behind my truck =
with the 10 inch centerline wheels and backing up over them....Then I =
roll forward over them and then back up again.....I thought I finally =
had that all figured out till about a month ago when my CDRW decided it =
only ate data and would no longer retrieve it.....Now I can buy a new =
one and I am sure that all the stuff I do have will not be readable by =
the new drive.....Sort of like when my zip drive started eating zips...I =
was told there was a place in Minnesooda that could retrieve my data for =
only $500 a zip.....Great, I needed to devise a more complete database =
anyway....so I backed it up with my truck....Sort of like using 3 1/2" =
floppies....They suck.....And before them; 5 !/2" floppies.....They suck =
also....Before that we had a computer that actually used cassette =
tapes......All fun stuff to back up on....I just can't figure out how =
backing over stuff with my truck will help with my data loss(It is fun =
though)(And makes me feel a little better)

Dear Rush--

thank you for the suggestion on how to correctly back up data. I think I
will try that next. I had a CDRW installed, but it doesn't work. I have a
zip drive and have had similar problems (wonder if I could use them for
teeny tiny batts?)

>....Sort of like when my zip drive started eating zips...I was told there

zip.....

Yay, I've got 4 of 'em with data I can't get at. It's great to know I can
send 'em to Minnesooda for reclamation. Let's see, $500 a shot or my own
wheel, $500 a shot or my own wheel...tough decision.

>....Sort of like using 3 1/2" floppies....They suck.....And before them; 5

Cassette tapes suck. I have three of them that managed to #1, save stuff as
gibberish, and #2, break the link between two tapes so I can't get at
everything.

I have a friend who used one of those online data storage sites. Problem
is, it went poof with all his data, without warning (sounds like your web
site!)

So my question is...do I need to trade in my Jeep for a truck to back up my
stuff with, or can I just use what I have on hand?

"I only indulge when I've seen a snake, so I keep a supply of indulgences
and snakes handy"

Next time I have a computer disaster, I'm going to try THAT. Oh, wait. I
already do...

Best--
Kate

this may not be feasible - although there is nothing hard, most folk aren't
comfortable getting their hands inside a computer....

the cheapest back up solution these days is a second hard disk. Prices are
low too.

I would suggest having one installed, but if the CDRW installation is
indicative of the IT support you can buy, I would suggest you do it
yourself!

I would add to that excellent suggestion (which is my standard
technique) the suggestion by Russel Fouts a while back (which I have
also followed with great success) of installing Norton Ghost. I now
backup my ENTIRE computer contents by cloning to the 2nd HDD in less
than 35 minutes, all 6G of it!

only 6Gb?

Nah - you could do that with a few floppies.... I thought you needed to back
up something serious!

good piece of software.

if you are as much of a software junkie as me [my excuse - I train folk to
use computers, when they let me, so tend to look at any halfway sensible
demo or freebie programme on the front of a magazine], it is a good idea to
have a Ghost backup of a clean, base installation - Windows, updated
drivers, Office - perhaps, other core stable programs you use every day
[let's hear it for Photoshop...]. then when things fall over, you can wipe
the lot and restore to that base arrangement.
