bloody shino

We use a shino at Guilford that is quite smooth, carbon traps a little and
is very bloody. We call it simply "Red Shino". It is a variation of
Polly's Porcelain Shino.
The teapot was fired to cone 10 reduction in a gas kiln (Minnesota
Flat-top design after Mr. Nils Lou: see page 72 of his book, "The Art of
Firing") using propane. We reduced heavily for an hour after cone 012
dropped. After this hour we came out of body reduction very slowly and
continued to fire until cone 10 was halfway down. It helps the color to
have a 3 to 5 minute period of a little more oxygen cycling through the kiln
at the end of firing, but our damper is never more than 1/4 open. After
firing we brick it all up for 2 days before unloading-very slow cool. After
an initial 24 hours of being sealed we begin pulling the damper out inch by
inch every hour.
Sorry for the long-winded post. here is the recipe:

Red Shino

OM#4 Ball Clay 8.6
Redart 8.6
Neph Sy 39.4
Soda Ash 8.1
EPK 5.1
Spodumene 30.3

I have scans of what this glaze looks like, some other shino recipes and
scans. If anyone would like them please email me at jboyd@guilford.edu I
would also love to see your work as well.
Sincerely,
John Boyd
