I'm posting this for a a clayart member who can't get through to the list:

center lost the recipe. This glaze is rust to dark red, smooth with little
or no crawling, and does a little carbon trapping. If you know what the
recipe might be, I would really love it! It's a great glaze and they are
out of it."

If any of the shino crew knows where she can find this glaze would you
please post to the list?

Thanks from Caroline

Probably "Malcolm's Red Shino". It is in the archives
several times ( I don't have my glaze book at this computer).

It's a good, easy shino, particularly nice on porcelain, but
very rich on stonewares, too.

Hello: By now you probably already have the recipe of the red shino that
your looking for from Clayarts "Shino Rapid Response Team" Soooo.. while we
are on the subject of Red Shinos. I've been substituting part or all of the
Kaolin with Alumina to get a bit more of a rose color. I have not tried this
in a gas kiln, only in wood firing. Does anyone have any experince in trying
this? Also has anyone added table salt instead of Soda Ash.

Craig
In Minneasota where it's 34 and Sunny can spring be far away?

Craig,

I feel like I should know for sure but I believe it has something to do with
the silica/alumina ratios--this is an area I am weak in and will hopefully
soon remedy my glaze/chem skills with the help of some clay buds, books, and
testing. I have two shinos that I like to use--one is red the other
orange--I did an analysis on the glaze chem website (I think?) and they are
nearly the same glaze based on their silica and alumnia ratios--need to
re-read Hank and other clay buds articles. So, why when the alumina and
silica levels are nearly the same with my two glaze does one turn orange and
the other red? I don't know but I am going to learn the seger, unity stuff,
etc in 2002! I think it has to do with the spodumene and or the nephy sy.
Time to get behind the scenes.

I know with any shino I have used, the amount of iron the clay body has a
great much to do with the outcome of the shino and the amount of soda ash.
Too much iron and the iron will bleed through of course depending on how
thick you put your shino on. I have been working with shinos exclusively
for ten years now--yah, I was only guy for a while with totally all shino
pots at the few shows I did. Everything I have learned has been from
observation, testing, wrecking, learning, etc--the more I think I know the
more I realize I don't know--it seems for every rule someone tries to
establish about shino, there is another person who says "well, I don't need
any soda ash to get carbon trapping" or someting else to that affect--this
is why I like shino--unpredictable, seductive and tragic at the same
time--like my earlier loves.

I would say if you want redder, continue in the direction you are: play
with ratios in 5% increments, also, put the shino on thinner and make sure
you have some added iron in your body--put it in till you get a very light
pinkess color to your body. Good luck.

Thank you.
